The system provides reliable braking from highway speeds, with the servo assistance making pedal effort comparable with the four-cylinder MGB despite the V8's greater stopping demands.
Brake Discs
10.75 inch front brake discs are the standard V8 specification. Discs wear at their friction surfaces and develop scoring, lipping at the outer edge, and overall thickness reduction over time. Discs should be measured for thickness at every brake service and renewed when below the minimum thickness specification, where deeply scored, or where heat-discoloured from prolonged heavy use.
Brake Pads
Front brake pads are the wear interface between the caliper and the disc. The factory specification was an asbestos-based pad material in original production; modern pads use safer non-asbestos friction materials with comparable braking characteristics. Pads should be inspected at every service and renewed when worn to the minimum thickness or showing uneven wear that suggests caliper problems.
Calipers
The single-piston floating caliper design uses a piston on one side that pushes one pad against the disc, with the caliper body sliding to bring the second pad into contact from the other side. Caliper pistons can corrode in their bores, particularly where moisture in the brake fluid has caused internal damage. Caliper service kits include new piston seals, dust boots and bleed nipples for caliper overhaul.
Disc Shields
Disc shields fitted behind each front brake disc protect the disc and caliper from road debris and provide some heat shielding. The shields are V8-specific items matching the V8 disc and caliper geometry. Damaged or missing shields should be renewed during front brake work.
