MGB GT V8 Clutch, Gearbox & Axle

Clutch, Gearbox & Axle

The all-synchromesh gearbox was introduced at the start of production with the MGB mark II, series GHN4/GHD4. This all-synchromesh gearbox was also used on the MGC with a different case to suit the C series engine and a larger 9” clutch but also had alternative closer ratios on some models. The MGB GT V8 used its own version of this gearbox with an enlarged case to accommodate an even larger clutch, and it also adopted the MGC closer ratio gear cluster. The MGB GT V8 had a Borg & Beck Clutch that was 9 ½” in diameter. The clutch pedal operated a Lockheed hydraulic master cylinder, which was 1.2mm smaller diameter than the four-cylinder cars, but the slave cylinder bore was reduced by a greater 1/2” (12.7mm) to provide a more suitable hydraulic ratio for better clutch operation with the significantly heavier clutch.
