Classic Mini Switch Panels

Classic Mini Interiors > Switch Panels

The switch panel is the strip of trim mounted in the centre of the dashboard that carries the heater, light, wiper, hazard and accessory switches. On the original Classic Mini fascia it was a plain plastic moulding, finished in black or body colour depending on the trim level, functional, but a visual gap in an otherwise carefully restored cabin. Replacing the original switch panel with a veneered overlay is the second half of the dashboard upgrade, transforming the centre of the fascia to match the dashboard finish for a fully coordinated look. The QParts premium switch panel range covers Genuine Burr Walnut and Charcoal finishes in every common switch and control knob configuration the original cars were fitted with. Identifying Your Switch Configuration Switch panels were fitted with a varying number of rocker switches and control knobs depending on the trim level and production date. The most common arrangements are 4-switch and 5-switch panels, sometimes with one or two additional control knobs (typically used for the panel illumination dimmer or rear screen heater). Counting the number of rocker switches and circular control knobs on your existing switch panel is the quickest way to identify the correct overlay variant. The available configurations cover 4 switches alone, 4 switches with 1 control knob, 4 switches with 2 control knobs, 5 switches alone, 5 switches with 1 control knob, and 5 switches with 2 control knobs. Burr Walnut Switch Panels The Genuine Burr Walnut switch panel is the traditional period choice, a true wood veneer over a moulded substrate, hand-finished and lacquered for durability. Burr Walnut suits a classic period restoration, light cabin trim and chrome bezels, and is the natural pairing for the Burr Walnut dashboard, door cappings, gear knob and hand brake grip for a fully coordinated cabin upgrade. Burr Walnut switch panels are available in all six switch and control knob configurations. Charcoal Switch Panels Charcoal is the modern matte alternative, a soft, low-sheen finish that suits darker cabin trim, leather seats and the late 1990s and 2000-spec Cooper variants. Charcoal switch panels pair with the Charcoal dashboard, door furniture and gear knob and hand brake grip range for a coordinated cabin in a contemporary tone. Charcoal switch panels are available in the same range of switch and control knob configurations as the Burr Walnut range. Coordinated Cabin Upgrades The switch panel finish should normally match the dashboard finish for a coordinated cabin. The dashboard range carries four finishes (Burr Walnut, Charcoal, Brushed Aluminium and Carbon Fibre), and the switch panel range currently carries the two most popular of these, Burr Walnut and Charcoal. Owners specifying Brushed Aluminium or Carbon Fibre dashboards typically retain the original-finish switch panel rather than replace it, or use a custom finish to match. Door furniture and gear knob and hand brake grip ranges also carry matching Burr Walnut and Charcoal options, making both the available switch panel finishes part of a complete coordinated upgrade across the cabin. Fitment The switch panel is mounted to the dashboard with a small number of fixings and is removed by detaching the existing switches and control cables from behind the panel. Switches and cables need to come off to fit the new panel, then re-attach to the new panel as it is refitted to the dashboard, a straightforward operation that takes around twenty to thirty minutes for an unhurried fitter. No specialist tools are required beyond a small screwdriver and a pair of needle-nose pliers. The original switch panel can be retained and refitted at any time, the upgrade is fully reversible. Original-Specification Switch Panels For owners restoring to factory specification rather than upgrading, the original-pattern shelf moulding with switch panel hole is available for both painted-finish and trimmed-finish fascias. These items are listed in the standard fascia range and are the correct choice for cars being returned to factory finish without the veneered overlay treatment. MGOC Spares Mini Switch Panel Range The MGOC Spares Classic Mini switch panel range covers QParts premium Burr Walnut and Charcoal overlay switch panels in 4-switch (with 0, 1 or 2 control knobs) and 5-switch (with 0, 1 or 2 control knobs) configurations, six variants in each finish, designed to coordinate with the equivalent dashboard, door furniture and gear knob and hand brake grip finishes. Original-specification shelf mouldings with switch panel cut-outs for painted and trimmed fascias are available alongside the upgrade range for restoration to factory finish.
