Hose clips secure flexible hoses to their mating components, radiator hose to radiator outlet, fuel hose to carburettor union, heater hose to heater valve, vacuum hose to inlet manifold. The clip provides the radial compression that the hose needs to seal against the pipe stub, and the right clip in the right place is the difference between a leak-free installation and a slow drip that needs attention every few weeks. The Hose Clips section covers the conventional Jubilee-pattern worm-drive clips and the period-correct alternatives. Jubilee Pattern Worm-Drive Clips The Jubilee pattern is the modern workshop standard, a stainless-steel band with a slotted body that is tightened by a worm-drive screw at one end. The clip can be adjusted by simple screwdriver action, the worm drive provides the mechanical advantage needed to apply meaningful clamping force, and the stainless construction resists corrosion through the long service life of the application. The clips are stocked in the sizes needed across the classic-MG range, from the small clips suited to vacuum and emission lines (typically 8 to 12mm) through to the larger clips for cooling-system top and bottom hoses (typically 25 to 45mm). The hose diameter at the application determines the right clip size, with the appropriate overlap on the band for proper clamping force. Period-Correct Slotted-Band Clips Period-correct slotted-band clips, the patterns originally fitted to BMC and BL cars during production, are stocked for owners restoring cars to concours specification. The slotted-band design uses a single screw or bolt drawing two halves of the band together, rather than the worm-drive Jubilee pattern. The clamping force is comparable, the appearance is period-correct, and the clip is appropriate for cars where the original factory clip type is a specified part of the restoration. Wire-loop clips, the simpler pattern using a wire loop drawn together by a screw, are stocked for the earliest applications where this was the original specification. For owners running cars on a daily-driver basis rather than a concours basis, the Jubilee pattern is the easier choice; for concours and originality-led restoration, the period-correct patterns are the right answer. Sizing and Application The hose-clip size is referenced to the band's adjustment range, a 25-40mm clip has a band that adjusts from 25mm to 40mm internal diameter, suitable for hoses with that range of outside diameter (taking into account the hose-wall thickness and the pipe stub it is fitting over). Selecting the right size means measuring the application: an oversized clip will not close down far enough to seal; an undersized clip cannot open wide enough to fit over the hose. Two clips are sometimes used on critical applications, particularly fuel-system unions, where a single clip would meet the specification but two provide redundancy in case one loosens over time. Heater-hose joints, where the heater valve and matrix unions are particularly sensitive to leakage, often benefit from this approach. The technical team is available to advise on the right clip type and size for any specific job.
