Floor carpet renewal is one of the most consequential interior restoration tasks on any classic MG, the carpet is the dominant visual element of the cabin floor area, it is one of the most demanding cleaning and maintenance items in normal use, and it ages cosmetically more visibly than most other interior components. The Trimming Carpet section gathers the sheet carpet materials needed for complete floor recovery or sectional repair work, in the period-correct colours and pile constructions used during classic-MG production.
Loop-Pile and Cut-Pile Constructions
Two principal carpet constructions were used across classic-MG production. Loop-pile carpet (also known as Berber-style carpet) uses uncut yarn loops as the pile, producing a textured surface with high durability and the visual character of woven fabric. Loop-pile was the standard specification for most chrome-bumper MGB and contemporaneous classic-MG applications, with the characteristic visual texture matching the period look of the cars. Cut-pile carpet uses cut yarn ends as the pile, producing a smoother, plusher surface with a different visual character.
Cut-pile became more common on later production cars and on higher-specification interior schemes, with the smoother surface suiting the more luxurious interior approach of certain MGC GT and MGB GT specifications. Reproductions of both constructions are stocked in the appropriate weights and pile densities matching the original specifications.
Period-Correct Colour Range
Carpet colours are stocked in the period-correct range used across classic-MG production. Black is the most common colour, matched to the standard black-vinyl interior schemes of most classic-MG applications. Red is the period-correct colour for the popular red-and-black interior combinations used on certain chrome-bumper MGB and Midget specifications. Tan, brown, and the various beige colours cover the higher-specification interiors where the carpet was specified in a contrasting colour to the seat upholstery.
Navy blue and other less-common specifications cover the smaller-volume colour options. Each colour is matched to the original specifications, with appropriate consideration of the slight variations between production years that the original supplier produced.
Complete Sets and Sectional Material
Carpet is stocked as complete pre-cut sets for the principal classic-MG applications, typically a set of pre-shaped pieces for each floor area, with the pieces cut to match the contours of the floor pan, transmission tunnel, sill area and rear bulkhead. The complete set approach simplifies the renewal work, the pieces fit cleanly into their designated areas without the need for cutting and fitting from raw material. For sectional repair work (where only certain areas of the original carpet need renewal), sheet carpet in the appropriate colours and constructions is available in the widths and lengths needed for the specific repair. Edge binding (covered in the Carpet Fixings section) finishes the cut edges where the carpet meets seats, sills or bulkheads.
The technical team is available to advise on the right carpet specification for a specific car and intended renewal approach.
