MG ZR ZS ZT & Modern Wipers

Wipers

The MG ZR, ZS and ZT use three distinct wiper-blade fitments, all sharing the standard hook-arm mounting that became universal on European cars of this period. The ZR and ZS use a common blade pattern derived from their Rover 25 and Rover 45 donors, front blades are typically 530mm driver's side and 480mm passenger side, with a rear blade fitted to the hatchback and saloon variants where applicable. The MGOC catalogue offers a combined set covering the front left-hand and rear blade for the ZR and ZS (DKC100700), reflecting the common length used in those positions. The ZT and ZT-T use longer wiper blades to clear the wider Rover 75-derived screen, typically 600mm driver's side and 530mm passenger side, with the ZT-T estate adding a dedicated rear wiper blade. MGOC catalogues the ZT front blades separately as left-hand (DKC100950) and right-hand (DKC100940) items, plus the ZT-T rear wiper blade (DKC000120). Identifying the car and the body style (saloon or estate on the ZT, hatch or saloon on the ZS) is essential before ordering. ZR and ZS Wiper Service Wiper blades on the ZR and ZS are the most frequently replaced consumable on these cars, the standard 12-month replacement interval is widely under-observed, and most cars arrive at MOT time with wipers that have been on the car for two to three years. A worn blade leaves a faint smear arc on the screen at the blade reversal point, scrubs poorly in heavy rain and accelerates wear on the wiper motor at full sweep. The ZR and ZS rear wiper is fitted to the tailgate of the hatchback variants, and shares the common rear-arm mounting with the front blades for service simplicity, a useful design detail for owners replacing all three blades in a single workshop visit. The wiper motor itself is mounted in the scuttle area and shares its plenum location with the engine ECU on K-series cars; blocked plenum drains can lead to water reaching both the motor and the ECU, so wiper motor refurbishment is sometimes needed alongside ECU work after a serious drain failure. The intermittent wiper relay is integrated into the Pektron SCU on post-August 2003 cars (covered in detail in the Electrics section). ZT, ZT-T and CDTi Wiper Service The ZT range uses larger wipers throughout to suit the wider screen and the saloon and estate body styles. Front blades are catalogued as separate left-hand and right-hand items because the driver's blade is significantly longer than the passenger's and the two cannot be substituted. The ZT-T estate adds a rear blade to clear the tailgate window, a separate item from the front blades and from the ZR/ZS rear blade because the arm and pivot geometry differs. ZT cars across the four-cylinder, KV6 and CDTi variants use the same wiper hardware, with no engine-specific differences. Owners restoring a ZT or ZT-T after a long lay-up should also inspect the wiper arm splines for corrosion at the pivot, a seized arm can damage the wiper motor on first use, and replacement arms are sometimes required alongside the blades. The wiper park position is set electronically by the wiper control module in the BCU, and is normally self-correcting after a battery disconnect. Beam-Style Wiper Upgrades and Ordering Aerodynamic flat-blade wipers (often called "beam" blades, and sometimes referred to as "bulb" or "stealth" blades) have become a popular owner upgrade across the Z-car range. They use a one-piece spring steel structure rather than the original metal-frame multi-link design, and offer better screen contact at speed and lower wind noise. Most aftermarket flat blades fit the original hook-arm mounting on the ZR, ZS and ZT without modification, the blade-to-arm interface is the same standard hook seen on most European cars of the period. When ordering a complete wiper service, owners should specify the car, the body style (estate or saloon on the ZT, hatch or saloon on the ZS) and whether the rear blade is needed. Wiper motors and arms are not currently catalogued at MGOC Spares for these cars but are available from the wider Rover Group specialist network where complete refurbishment is required.
