MGA Distributor

Electrics > Distributor

The distributor is the heart of the MGA's ignition system, timing the high-voltage spark to each cylinder and modulating the ignition timing through mechanical centrifugal weights and a vacuum advance capsule. Two closely-related Lucas distributor types were fitted to pushrod MGAs across production: the earlier DM2P4 and the later 25D4. Both are 4-cylinder, side-entry cap, positive-earth distributors, and both are serviced by broadly the same family of wearing parts. The internal point plate arrangement differs between them and replacement items must match the type fitted. DM2P4 and 25D4, the two main pushrod types The Lucas DM2P4 was the original MGA distributor, fitted to 1500 cars and to early 1600s. The Lucas 25D4 superseded the DM2P4 during production; the key internal change is the point plate, the DM2P4 uses an earlier plate design with the contact breaker set retained by two mounting screws, whereas the 25D4 has a revised plate with a single-screw contact breaker set. The centrifugal advance weights and springs were also revised to give more stable timing at tickover. Both types drive a central rotor arm and a side-entry cap onto four HT lead positions; cap, rotor and condenser are broadly common. MGOC stocks new distributor assemblies in both the 25D4 and DM2P4 patterns. For restoration to original pattern, the type stamped on the distributor body should be matched by the replacement. For cars where the original distributor has been lost or swapped, the 25D4 is generally the more serviceable option today as parts are more readily available. Twin Cam, no vacuum advance from engine 2223 Twin Cam MGAs used a distributor similar to the pushrod types but with modified advance for the higher-revving DOHC engine. From engine number 2223, a distributor without vacuum advance was fitted, a deliberate change made to prevent over-advancing and the piston burning that the Twin Cam was prone to under hard use. Twin Cam ignition specifications differ from the pushrod cars; confirm the engine number against this breakpoint before ordering. Contact breaker set, rotor, condenser, cap Routine distributor service items are stocked for the 25D4, which covers the vast majority of MGAs on the road today. The contact breaker set ("points") is the consumable item most often replaced during routine service; a standard contact set and a graded contact set are both stocked, and must match the point plate design. A graded rotor arm is stocked for the 25D4, suitable for use with the original points setup or with modern contactless ignition. Two condenser options are stocked: a standard Lucas-pattern condenser, and a Retronix universal performance condenser offering improved reliability over the period-style item. The factory side-entry distributor cap is stocked as the type where HT leads enter the cap from the side rather than the top, common to both DM2P4 and 25D4 distributors. A rubber weatherproof cover is stocked as a service item. Vacuum advance unit and pipework The vacuum advance capsule adjusts ignition timing in response to inlet manifold vacuum. MGOC stocks a vacuum advance unit with push-fit connection for pre-1971 25D and 23D distributors. The factory vacuum pipe is a preformed metal pipe with an integral flame trap, a safety feature that prevents ignition backfire from travelling through the vacuum line into the carburettors. A plastic vacuum advance pipe is stocked by the metre for custom runs, along with 90-degree and straight connectors, brass olives and tube nuts for termination at both ends. Mounting hardware The distributor clamp that secures the body to the cylinder block is stocked without the pinch bolt and nut, the standard-pattern fixings are sold separately alongside the clamp. UNF pan-head screws, spring washers and plain washers in 1/4 size cover the contact breaker and point plate mounting. An oil filler cap for the distributor is stocked as a service item. Ordering considerations Distributor parts selection starts with identifying the type, DM2P4 or 25D4, from the body stamping on the existing unit. Contact breaker sets, point plates and internal service items are not interchangeable between the two; cap, rotor, condenser and vacuum advance unit are broadly common. For Twin Cam cars, confirm the engine number against the 2223 breakpoint for vacuum-advance vs non-vacuum-advance specification. Where full distributor replacement is needed and the original type cannot be confirmed, the 25D4 pattern is the more serviceable choice today.
