The MGB GT V8 clutch is a single-dry-plate diaphragm-spring type sized for the Rover V8's torque output. The friction disc fits between the engine flywheel and the clutch pressure plate, with a release bearing operating against the diaphragm spring fingers when the clutch pedal is depressed. The clutch is hydraulically operated via a slave cylinder mounted on the gearbox bellhousing, with the pedal master cylinder on the bulkhead.
Clutch Driven Plate
The driven plate (friction disc) is V8-specific, sized for the V8's flywheel diameter and matched to the V8 pressure plate. The friction material wears in service and the plate must be renewed when the friction surfaces approach the rivet heads. The plate also incorporates torsion springs in the hub that absorb drive-train shock and reduce noise transmission.
Pressure Plate Assembly
The pressure plate assembly bolts to the flywheel and provides the spring force that clamps the driven plate between the flywheel and pressure plate. The factory unit is a diaphragm-spring type, a single conical spring acts as both the clamping element and the release lever mechanism. Pressure plate assemblies are typically renewed alongside the driven plate during clutch work.
Release Bearing
The release bearing slides on the gearbox front cover, pushed forward by the clutch fork when the pedal is depressed. It contacts the diaphragm spring fingers and lifts the clamping force off the driven plate, allowing the clutch to disengage. Release bearings are wear items, typically replaced alongside the driven plate and pressure plate during a complete clutch service.
Clutch Fork
The clutch fork is a steel lever that pivots on a ball-stud inside the bellhousing, transmitting motion from the slave cylinder to the release bearing. The fork tips that contact the release bearing wear in service, and the ball-stud pivot point can also wear.
Replacement forks and ball-studs are available where wear has progressed.
