The factory MGB GT V8 cooling system was specified for the standard 137bhp 3528cc engine in normal British road use. For cars used hard, in warmer climates, on track days, or fitted with capacity-upgrade engines, the cooling system can benefit from upgrade. The available routes are higher-capacity radiators, uprated cooling hoses, lower-temperature thermostats, electric fan upgrades and supplementary aids such as the Kenlowe Hotstart pre-heater.
Aluminium Radiators
The NRP1059ALU all-aluminium radiator is a high-efficiency replacement that allows performance V8s to run at lower temperatures, with a thicker matrix and more efficient core geometry than the original brass-and-copper item. It is also lighter, a useful incidental benefit on the front axle. Aluminium radiators fit using the original mounting points and connections, making them a straightforward swap during a cooling-system rebuild.
Cooling Hose Kits
Silicone cooling hose kits replace the original rubber hoses with silicone-rubber items that resist heat-cycling damage and offer significantly longer service life. Kits are matched to the V8 cooling system layout and include the top, bottom, by-pass and heater hoses required.
Lower-Temperature Thermostat
The GTS102 74°C thermostat is recommended for high-capacity or high-performance V8 engines where a lower stabilised running temperature is wanted, in place of the standard GTS104 82°C item.
Electric Fan Upgrades
The G115 Kenlowe Twin Fan Kit is tailored specifically for MGB V8 models, includes two fans and operates thermostatically, cutting in only when required and allowing full warm-up. The G119 Fan Thermo-Switch Kit fits in the top hose to activate the fans when needed. Revotec electric cooling fan systems offer further options for fine-tuning fan operation.
Hotstart Pre-Heater
The F210 Kenlowe Hotstart pre-heats the engine to normal working temperature before the engine is started, using a 220 to 240 V mains supply. Benefits include eliminating choke use on starting and providing instant heater output.
