The MGB GT V8 uses a combination of steering column-stalk switches and dashboard rocker switches for the various electrical functions. The column stalks operate the indicators (with self-cancelling), main and dipped beam selection (and headlamp flash), windscreen wipers and washers, and the overdrive engagement (on the left-hand stalk). The dashboard rocker switches operate the lighting (side lights, headlamps), heater fan, brake test, and other secondary functions. The ignition switch is on the steering column behind the steering wheel.
Ignition Switch
The ignition switch on the steering column has the standard four positions: Off, Accessory (radio and accessories live, ignition off), On (full ignition live, dashboard warning lights operational), and Start (operates the starter relay, returns to On position when released). The switch contains heavy-duty contacts for the various circuits and is a wear item that can develop intermittent operation, typically a no-start condition that improves when the key is wiggled in the lock.
Column Stalks
Steering column stalks operate the major frequently-used controls. The right-hand stalk on the V8 is conventionally the indicator and lights stalk; the left-hand stalk operates the wipers, washers and overdrive. Column stalk switch contacts wear in service, causing intermittent operation of the controlled functions. Stalk replacement is straightforward with the steering column accessible.
Dashboard Rocker Switches
Dashboard rocker switches mount in the V8 fascia panel HZA4916E, operating the various secondary electrical functions. The rocker switch design is common to several British cars of the period and the switches are widely available as replacement items. Dashboard switch labelling and lighting (where present) varies between specifications.
Service Notes
Switch contact problems are typically caused by oxidation on the internal contacts. In some cases, switch operation can be restored by working the switch repeatedly, wiping the oxidation off the contact faces. Persistent problems require switch replacement. Dashboard removal may be needed to access some switch installations for replacement work.
MGOC Spares
MGOC Spares supplies V8 ignition switches, column stalks, dashboard rocker switches, lighting switches and switch service components for the MGB GT V8.
