Electrical upgrade options for the MGB GT V8 cover battery maintenance, modern accessories, charging system upgrades, ignition system upgrades and lighting improvements. Each addresses a specific aspect of the original 1970s electrical specification with modern improvements that retain the original character of the car while offering better reliability or performance.
Battery and Maintenance
Battery chargers and conditioners maintain battery condition during periods of disuse, particularly important for V8s that may not be driven regularly. Hazard light retrofit kits add the four-way flashing function that was not standard on early V8s, providing modern road-traffic compatibility.
Charging System
High-output alternators provide additional charging capacity for cars with significant additional electrical loads, added accessories, modern electronic ignition, additional lighting. The factory AC Delco alternator is well-suited to the standard car's electrical demands; high-output alternators address the demands of modified or accessory-fitted cars.
Starter Motor
Hi-torque starter motors are available as upgrades providing greater cranking torque than the standard Lucas 3M100. Higher cranking torque benefits cold-start reliability and engines built to higher compression ratios. Availability of specific hi-torque starter specifications varies, see the Hi-Torque Starter Motors sub-section for current information.
Ignition Upgrades
Electronic ignition units replace the contact points and condenser in the distributor with a hall-effect or optical trigger, eliminating points wear and providing more consistent ignition timing. Performance distributors with revised advance curves suit modified engines. Performance coils provide higher spark output for high-output ignition systems. Red Rotor Arms offer improved durability over standard rotor arms.
Lighting Upgrades
Halogen sealed-beam headlamps and modern LED lighting upgrades improve night-time visibility significantly over the original sealed-beam specification. The choice depends on how original the car is to remain, concours-restored cars typically retain the original lamps; cars used regularly on modern roads benefit from upgraded lighting.
