MGB GT V8 MGB V8 Performance Engines

Engine > MGB V8 Performance Engines

Capacity-upgrade engines for the MGB GT V8 are built around the later-pattern Rover V8 blocks produced in 4.0 and 4.6 litre forms, offering a substantial increase in power and torque over the original 3528cc unit while retaining the broad operating characteristics that make the V8 such a satisfying engine in the MGB shell. The Rover V8 architecture remained essentially the same throughout its long production life, with capacity increases achieved by enlarging the bore in the 3.9 and 4.0 litre versions and by enlarging both bore and stroke in the 4.6 litre version, and crucially the external dimensions, mounting points, and ancillary fixings remain very close to the original 3528cc unit, allowing later-capacity engines to fit within the MGB engine bay using essentially the standard installation. This is the established route to substantially more performance from a V8-engined MGB, building on the long track record the Rover V8 has accumulated on the platform. The 4.0 Litre Engine The 4.0 litre engine offers a significant power and torque increase over the 3528cc original, typically in the order of 200bhp depending on the build specification, while retaining the broad operating characteristics of the V8, the smooth torque delivery and the effortless mid-range that define the engine's character in the car. The 4.0 litre block is the same external size as the 3528cc and uses the same mounting points, so the conversion is mechanically straightforward, the engine dropping into the V8 engine bay using the existing mountings and the standard installation hardware. Cars fitted with a 4.0 litre engine should be uprated in supporting systems to suit the increased output, the cooling system in particular needing to cope with the greater heat rejection, the braking system benefiting from uprated friction material and the existing servo assistance being adequate but worth checking, and the transmission and final drive being matched to handle the additional torque. The 4.6 Litre Engine The 4.6 litre engine provides the largest readily available capacity increase, with both bore and stroke enlarged from the 3528cc original, and power and torque outputs are correspondingly higher than the 4.0 litre, making it the choice for owners wanting maximum performance from the V8 platform. As with the 4.0 litre, the 4.6 litre block fits the MGB engine bay using V8-specific mounting and installation hardware, but supporting systems should be specified to suit the higher output, the cooling, fuel system, exhaust, and transmission all needing to be planned around the engine rather than left at standard specification, as the additional power and torque place greater demands on every part of the drivetrain and the cooling system than the original 3528cc unit produced. Engine Identification & Specification Capacity-upgrade engines are not original-specification MGB GT V8 units, and owners considering a capacity upgrade should be aware that the original 4860-prefixed engine is the only specification that retains the car's full factory authenticity, so a non-original engine is a permanent change to the car that affects its originality for concours and valuation purposes. Nonetheless, the 4.0 and 4.6 litre engines are well-established upgrade routes with a long track record on the V8 platform, chosen by owners who prioritise performance and driveability over strict originality, and for whom the additional capacity transforms an already-capable car into a genuinely fast one. Engine specification, supply terms, and lead times vary by build, and a full specification discussion is recommended before order, as the supporting components, cooling, fuel system, exhaust, and transmission, need to be planned around the chosen engine to produce a balanced and reliable installation rather than an engine that outruns the systems supporting it. The engineering staff are available to advise on the appropriate engine specification, ancillary requirements, and supporting upgrades to suit the intended use of the car.
