Exhaust upgrades for the V8 fall into three areas: stainless steel system replacements for greatly extended service life, performance manifolds for improved breathing on higher-output engines, and thermal management products to reduce under-bonnet heat and improve combustion efficiency.
Stainless Steel Systems
Stainless steel replacement systems offer significantly longer service life than the mild steel originals, typically several decades rather than several years. They are made to factory geometry where appropriate, retaining the original V8 sound character, and are available with chrome or stainless steel tail trims. The cost is higher than mild steel but the long service life makes them the obvious choice for cars that are restored once and run for many years afterwards.
Stainless Tubular Manifolds
Stainless tubular manifolds are an alternative to the cast-iron factory items where reduced exhaust back-pressure and additional power are sought. The tubular construction with longer primary pipes allows better gas flow than the cast-iron originals. Tubular manifolds are typically chosen for cars built for performance use rather than for original-specification restorations, and benefit from being matched to a higher-output engine specification to give a balanced result.
Manifold Wrap and Heat Management
Exhaust manifold wrap reduces radiated heat from the manifolds into the engine bay, with benefits in terms of carburettor heat soak, spark plug lead longevity, and overall engine bay temperature. Wrap is supplied by length and is wound around the manifold tubes, secured with stainless steel clips.
