Converting a disc or Rostyle wheel MGB to wire wheels is not simply a matter of fitting different wheels to the existing hubs. Wire wheel and disc wheel axles differ in width, wire wheel axles being approximately 1.5 inches narrower between drum faces than disc wheel axles, and the front and rear hub spline specifications are entirely different. Fitting wire wheels to original disc wheel hubs will result in incorrect offset, compromised handling geometry, and potential safety issues, so the correct approach is a complete hub conversion using purpose-made splined hubs that compensate for the dimensional difference and provide the correct offset for proper wheel arch clearance and handling.
Conversion Kits
A complete wire wheel conversion kit for MGB tube axle cars from 1965 onwards is available, suitable for both Roadster and GT and compatible with steel wheel and disc wheel setups. The kit includes front and rear splined hubs and all the hardware required for correct installation, addressing the change in hub thread specification and providing instructions covering stud length requirements for proper contact and alignment. A banjo axle conversion kit covers early Roadsters. Rear centre lock conversion hubs are also available separately for owners who require only the rear hub set, or who are completing a partial conversion or replacing worn hubs on a car already fitted with front wire wheel hubs.
