The exterior finishers and mouldings on the MGB provide the trim detail that separates a well-presented car from one that is simply mechanically sound. These components evolved across the production run, and many are period-specific, chrome bumper trim pieces differ from rubber bumper cars in both design and mounting, and the Leyland-era changes from 1970 affected various exterior finishers.
Threshold Plates
Threshold plates finish the sill entry point at each door opening, protecting the body from foot scuffing and providing a bright trim detail at the door sill. Sill tread plates were introduced from the 1970 model year, fitted in the base of the door openings when the interior was revised with new seats, trim, and the dipping interior mirror.
Side Mouldings
The six-piece side moulding set covers front wings, doors, and rear wings in original equipment specification. These mouldings were fitted throughout the chrome bumper production run.
The rubber bumper car from September 1974 used body-coloured mouldings as part of the revised exterior treatment, and the two types are not interchangeable. Body moulding clips, secured by stud plates, nuts, and spring washers, hold the side mouldings in position and should be inspected and renewed whenever mouldings are removed, as deteriorated clips allow the moulding to rattle or pull away from the body.
Gutter & Waist Finishers
Chrome gutter finishers and door waist finishers are available across the production range. The door waist finisher was always black on all cars until the 1970 model year, regardless of the main trim colour.
From 1970, the waist rail became colour-matched to the interior trim on some specifications.
Stainless Oversills & Threshold Plates
Mirror-finish stainless steel oversills are available in several fixing styles with a choice of coloured inserts to complement the car’s colour. Threshold plates in mirror-finish stainless steel are available in a variety of lettering styles and in original alloy style. A fresh air intake grille and mesh insert for the scuttle are available, the mesh insert preventing leaves and debris being drawn into the heater box. All associated fixings and clips for exterior finisher installation are available alongside the main components.
