MGC Upgrades & Alternatives

Cooling > Upgrades & Alternatives

The MGC's six-cylinder engine generates significantly more heat than the MGB's four-cylinder unit, making cooling system efficiency particularly important. The C-series engine weighs approximately 650 to 700 lb, nearly twice the MGB engine's weight, and this mass retains heat that must be dissipated effectively. Several proven upgrades are available to improve cooling performance beyond the original specification, whether for spirited road use, warmer climates, touring in mountainous terrain, or simply to provide additional margin on a car that is used regularly in conditions that the original 1960s cooling system was not designed to handle, such as modern stop-start traffic where the mechanical fan's low-speed airflow may be insufficient. Aluminium Radiators High-performance aluminium radiators offer improved heat dissipation over the original brass and copper construction, while maintaining the same mounting points for direct fitment. Aluminium's superior thermal conductivity transfers heat from the coolant to the incoming airstream more efficiently, reducing coolant temperatures particularly during sustained high-speed driving or in warm weather. The significant weight reduction, aluminium radiators are substantially lighter than brass and copper equivalents, is an additional benefit at the front of the MGC, where the heavy six-cylinder engine already places considerable demands on the front suspension. Electric Fan Conversions Revotec and Kenlowe electric fan kits replace the mechanical engine-driven fan with a thermostatically controlled electric unit. The electric fan operates only when the coolant temperature reaches the trigger point, providing full airflow regardless of engine speed, a critical advantage in slow-moving traffic where a mechanical fan is turning too slowly to be effective. At cruising speed, where ram air through the radiator provides adequate cooling, the electric fan remains off, eliminating parasitic power loss and mechanical noise. Cooling Hose Kits and Coolant Upgraded cooling hose kits with polyester reinforcement provide improved ozone resistance and increased durability over standard rubber hoses. Forlife long-life coolant provides ten-year protection with corrosion inhibition and a built-in pH indicator for head gasket monitoring. Water Wetter cooling system heat transfer agent can lower engine temperature by up to 15°C by reducing coolant surface tension.
