MGC Wipers

Weather Equipment > Wipers

The windscreen wiper system on the MGC, wiper motor, drive mechanism, wiper arms, and blades, is the same as fitted to the contemporary MGB (1967 to 1969 specification). The system provides two-speed operation with a self-parking function that returns the blades to the bottom of the windscreen when the wipers are switched off. The wiper arms and blades sweep the windscreen in a pattern determined by the wheelbox positions, which are the same as the MGB's. The wiper motor drives both arms through a cable or link mechanism from a single centrally-mounted motor. MGC-Specific Washer Reservoir The one distinction in the wash/wipe system is the windscreen washer fluid reservoir, which is unique to the MGC. The reservoir is a different shape and mounting arrangement from the MGB's, accommodating the different engine bay layout created by the six-cylinder engine and the forward-mounted radiator. The reservoir, retaining strap, filler cap, and non-return foot valve are all MGC-specific items. Upgraded washer jets providing a better spray pattern are available alongside original-specification jets. Maintenance Wiper blades should be replaced at least annually, rubber compounds harden with UV exposure and age, causing the blade to skip across the windscreen, leave streaks, and eventually scratch the glass. Modern silicone wiper blades offer significantly longer service life than traditional rubber, maintaining their flexibility and cleaning effectiveness for several years. The wiper arm spring tension should also be checked, weak springs allow the blade to lift from the glass at speed, reducing clearing effectiveness precisely when visibility is most critical.
