MGF & TF Front Inner Panels

Bodywork > Front Inner Panels

The complete front end assembly is catalogued as a single large structural pressing, ABB460020 for MGF and ABB460050 for MG TF, incorporating the headlamp mountings, front crossmember, spare wheel well, and multiple sub-components as a single welded assembly. The MGF and MG TF front end assemblies are fundamentally different pressings reflecting the different bumper and headlamp apertures between the two models, and are not interchangeable. The complete assembly is most often specified after major front-end collision damage where individual repair panels cannot restore the structure's geometry; for most service work, the individual sub-components listed below are ordered separately. Headlamp Mountings and Brackets The headlamp mounting assembly is handed LH and RH and model-specific, MGF uses ABH460020/030, MG TF uses ABH460101/111. Additional inner and outer headlamp brackets are catalogued individually (handed LH and RH), and MG TF adds a headlamp carrier (handed LH and RH, unique to the TF) to support the projector-type headlamp design. These brackets carry the headlamp units themselves and connect them to the front end assembly, replacement is typically done when collision damage has bent the original bracketry out of alignment, preventing correct headlamp aim. Bonnet Locking Platform ("Slam Panel") and Front Crossmember The bonnet locking platform, commonly known in MG circles as the "slam panel", is the horizontal front-of-engine-bay panel that carries the bonnet latch striker. A reinforcement strut is catalogued separately to support the platform. The front upper crossmember is included in the complete front end assembly; the lower crossmember is separately catalogued. Two handed subframe brackets (RH and LH) are integrated into the upper crossmember, these are the mounting points for the front subframe and are safety-critical items. Damage to the subframe brackets from collision impact is one of the few situations that genuinely requires complete front end assembly replacement rather than individual panel work. A-Post, Floor Reinforcement and Hoodwell Lid Handed LH and RH A-post assemblies are catalogued with their inner-wing-to-A-post reinforcements, significant structural items at the front of the passenger compartment. The main floor centre reinforcement sits under the cabin floor with 22 securing screws and provides the longitudinal strength tying the front structure to the rest of the bodyshell. The hoodwell lid, the hatch behind the seats that closes over the hood storage area, is catalogued along with its seal, 11 screws, and a self-adhesive heatshield that protects the lid from engine bay heat radiating forward. A front wheelarch mudshield, the cockpit bulkhead assembly with its seal, and two variants of the steering column blanking plate (one for cars with air conditioning, one without) complete the front inner panel listing. Corrosion Risk Areas Front inner panels are vulnerable to corrosion from road spray entering the front wheel arches and through the cooling and air intake openings below the front bumper. The subframe mounting areas and lower edges where water collects should be inspected periodically, this is more important on MG TF than on MGF cars, reflecting the differing zinc coating effectiveness between the two models noted in the Bodywork parent framing. Surface corrosion on these panels can progress to structural weakening if left unaddressed; early treatment with a zinc-rich primer and stone chip paint is worthwhile. Complete front end assembly replacement is reserved for collision damage, panel-level repair is the usual restoration path.
