MGF & TF Front Brakes

Brakes > Front Brakes

The MGF and MG TF use one of two front brake specifications. The mainstream specification fits MGF 1.8i, MGF 1.6i, MGF VVC (non-Trophy), MG TF 115, MG TF 120, and standard MG TF 135, using 240mm ventilated front discs clamped by pin-slider calipers with a 48mm piston. The uprated AP Racing specification fits MGF Trophy 160, MG TF 160, and MG TF variants fitted with the Sportpack 2 option, using 304mm ventilated front discs clamped by bright red AP Racing four-piston opposed calipers with bold MG branding. Brake discs, pads, and calipers are entirely different between the two specifications and not interchangeable. Brake Disc Kits, Standard, Club Slotted, and EBC Slotted/Dimpled Complete disc kits supplied as a pair of discs with matched pads are catalogued in four specifications. The standard vented kit provides direct OEM-specification replacement. The Club slotted kit uses Club-brand slotted performance discs with EBC Greenstuff Kevlar pads for the mainstream disc size. The EBC slotted-and-dimpled kit uses EBC's well-known performance discs with Greenstuff pads and is catalogued separately for the mainstream 240mm and for the AP Racing 304mm specifications. Slotted and dimpled or drilled discs improve braking efficiency by trapping and removing the gas film given off by pad materials under heavy braking, and work particularly well when used with Kevlar-compound pads. Individual Discs and Pad Sets Individual front discs and front pad sets are catalogued for owners doing routine service rather than a complete upgrade. Standard ventilated 240mm discs, 304mm Trophy/TF160 discs, Club slotted performance discs, EBC slotted-and-dimpled discs in both 240mm and Trophy/TF160 sizes, and a 280mm EBC oversize disc are all available. Pad options include the standard axle set for each disc specification and EBC Greenstuff Kevlar pads for both the mainstream and Trophy/TF160 applications. Greenstuff pads increase friction and braking efficiency in fast-road use with minimal dust generation, and are a cost-effective upgrade paired with matched slotted discs. Calipers, New and Reconditioned Exchange Front calipers are catalogued as handed LH and RH items for both the mainstream pin-slider specification and the AP Racing four-piston specification. Both specifications are supplied as new calipers or as reconditioned exchange units, reconditioned exchange represents a significant saving for owners whose original calipers are in good structural condition but require internal service, and the returned core is remanufactured by specialists to original specification. A caliper repair kit is catalogued for each specification, providing the seals and internal components needed to rebuild a caliper with a sound casting and bore. For the mainstream caliper, a guide pin kit (pair) and a dust cover kit (pair) are also catalogued individually for cars needing only these wear items rather than a full caliper rebuild. Stainless Braided Brake Hose Kits Braided stainless steel brake hose kits are catalogued separately for MGF and MG TF applications, the hose routing and length differ between the two models. Stainless braided hoses restrain the expansion that occurs with rubber brake hoses under hydraulic pressure, delivering a firmer pedal feel and more immediate brake response. The braided sleeve also protects against internal deterioration, giving considerably longer service life than the original rubber items which perish from within over time. Fitting braided hoses is typically considered alongside a complete brake fluid renewal, and the firmer pedal feel complements a pad or disc upgrade. Brake Service Tools and Materials Several service tools are catalogued for owners carrying out their own front brake work. The brake hose clamp allows safe clamping of flexible brake hoses during caliper removal without fluid loss. The Girling retraction tool is designed to wind back caliper pistons during pad replacement without damaging the piston or seal. Pipe bending tools in small and large sizes provide clean shaping of copper brake pipes during any pipe renewal work. Castrol brake cleaner aerosol removes contamination from disc and caliper surfaces during pad changes. Mintex Brake Lubricant, a specialist silicone grease for caliper slider pins and pad contact surfaces, should be applied during pad replacement to prevent uneven wear and brake squeal, normal lithium grease is unsuitable as it attacks the caliper rubber seals. Caliper Paint Kits For owners refurbishing caliper appearance, heat-resistant two-pack caliper paint kits are catalogued in red, black, and silver. Each kit contains pre-cleaner and paint sufficient for four calipers. A red finish replicates the factory AP Racing appearance on Trophy and TF 160 cars; black and silver provide alternatives for owners preferring a subtler finish or complementing specific wheel colours.
