MGF & TF Performance Air Filters

Fuel > Performance Air Filters

A performance induction kit is a complete replacement induction system for the MGF and MG TF, designed to be fitted in place of the factory air box assembly. It comprises an oiled-cotton-gauze cone filter, a moulded intake trumpet, a mounting bracket system, and the necessary hoses and fixings to integrate with the factory throttle body connection. The cotton gauze element offers a substantial increase in airflow capacity over the factory paper panel filter, contributing to sharper throttle response and a noticeably more present intake note. Like all open-element induction kits in mid-engine applications, it trades some of the factory air box's careful temperature control for increased airflow, the tradeoff being marginal on a daily-driven MGF or standard TF and accepted by owners looking for the character change it provides. Fitting takes around an hour with basic hand tools, with no drilling or permanent modifications to the car. When It Works Well The induction kit is most effective on standard MGF 1.8i, MGF 1.6i, MGF VVC, MG TF 115, MG TF 120, and MG TF 135 cars, engines that use the standard factory air box as the air filtration baseline, where it offers a genuine improvement in airflow responsiveness with a character change most owners find worthwhile. On MGF Trophy 160 and MG TF 160 cars, which are fitted as standard with a more sophisticated dual-mode cool-air intake system, it is a less straightforward upgrade, as the factory intake on those variants is already designed around high-airflow cool-air ducting, and swapping it for an open cone exposed to engine-bay heat can actually reduce peak performance under sustained hard use, so owners of those models should approach the decision with realistic expectations. Cleaning & Service Consumables A cotton-gauze filter is designed to be cleaned and re-oiled rather than disposed of and replaced. The cleaning kit contains the filter cleaner and instructions, and the oil sachet contains the filter oil used after cleaning to restore the filter's particulate-trapping capability, one sachet per filter being correct for a complete re-oil. Filter service is not demanding, with a recommended cleaning interval of around 100,000 miles under normal UK driving, so most owners will clean the filter far less frequently than a paper filter replacement interval, which is the long-term economic case. However, under-oiled or improperly cleaned cotton gauze loses its filtration capability rapidly, and DIY substitute cleaners or over-aggressive cleaning agents are a common cause of premature filter failure, so owners should budget to buy the cleaning kit and oil sachet alongside the kit itself. Realistic Expectations Fitting a performance induction kit to a standard-tune K-series engine produces a modest measurable airflow improvement but no dramatic peak power increase, the character change being more significant than the performance change, with the intake note becoming noticeably more present, throttle response feeling crisper, and the car taking on a more engaged feel. For significant power gains from the induction side, the kit needs supporting modifications, a free-flow exhaust system, an ECU recalibration matched to the improved breathing, and ideally a cold-air feed routed from outside the engine bay to the filter location. On their own, performance induction kits are a character modification with a small performance contribution, which remains a completely legitimate reason to fit one.
