High-output alternators provide increased electrical generation capacity for Midgets fitted with additional electrical equipment that exceeds the output of the standard Lucas alternator. Common additions that increase the electrical load include electric cooling fans, high-powered halogen or LED lighting, audio systems, heated seats, and multiple auxiliary driving lights.
High Output Alternators & Dynamos Specification
The standard alternator produces sufficient current for the car’s original electrical specification, but the cumulative load of aftermarket additions can exceed the alternator’s output at idle, causing the battery to discharge gradually in traffic. A high-output alternator addresses this by providing a higher maximum current and, critically, a higher output at low engine speeds where charging demand typically exceeds standard alternator capacity.
High Output Alternators & Dynamos Fitting
High-output alternators are available that fit the standard mounting bracket and use the existing fan belt arrangement. When fitting, the wiring from the alternator to the battery and the charging indicator lamp circuit should be checked for adequate wire gauge, the higher current output requires wire that can carry the increased load without excessive voltage drop.
