Midget Performance Ignition

Electrics > Performance Ignition

The Midget left the factory with a conventional contact-breaker (points) ignition system. While simple to maintain, the points system requires regular adjustment, drifts out of tune as the heel wears, and limits the consistency of the spark at higher engine speeds. Performance ignition upgrades address these limitations, improving starting, idle smoothness, and high-speed running while reducing maintenance. Electronic Ignition Conversion An electronic ignition kit replaces the contact-breaker points and condenser with a magnetic or optical trigger fitted inside the existing distributor. This eliminates points wear and the need for periodic adjustment, holds the ignition timing precisely, and provides a stronger, more consistent spark. The conversion is hidden inside the distributor cap, so external originality is preserved. Kits are specific to the distributor fitted, and to the electrical polarity of the car, so both must be confirmed before ordering, the earliest Midgets were positive earth before the change to negative earth. Sports Coils A sports ignition coil delivers a higher output voltage than the standard coil, producing a fatter spark that improves combustion, particularly under load and at higher revs. A sports coil is most effective when paired with electronic ignition, which can fully exploit the increased energy. The correct coil specification depends on whether a ballast resistor is fitted in the circuit, so the existing system must be identified to avoid coil overheating or weak running. HT Leads and Spark Plugs Uprated silicone HT lead sets offer better insulation and durability than the original PVC leads, reducing the risk of misfire caused by tracking in damp conditions. They are a direct replacement and a worthwhile renewal whenever the ignition system is overhauled. Correct spark plug grade selection complements the ignition upgrade and should match the engine specification and state of tune. Distributor Upgrades A reconditioned or uprated distributor with a curve matched to the engine restores correct advance characteristics that wear and age degrade over decades of service. For modified engines, a distributor with a revised advance curve can be specified to suit the camshaft and compression changes. The distributor fitted varies across the A-Series and 1500cc engines, so the engine and original distributor type must be identified before ordering.
