Grommets seal the holes in the bulkhead, floor, and inner wings through which wiring, cables, and pipes pass. Deteriorated grommets allow water, draughts, and engine fumes into the cockpit and should be renewed whenever the interior is stripped for retrimming.
Grommet Range
Grommets are available covering all the apertures in the Midget bulkhead and floor. Key items include the steering column grommet, heater cable grommet, wiring loom pass-through grommets, speedometer cable grommet, and the various blanking plugs that seal unused holes. Rubber blanking plugs are available in the standard sizes found across the Midget range.
Dynamat Xtreme
Dynamat Xtreme is the premium sound deadening material, consisting of an aluminium-faced butyl rubber sheet that adheres directly to the steel body panels. Applied to the floor pans, gearbox tunnel, and rear cockpit area, it provides maximum noise reduction, increases structural stiffness, and protects the steel from condensation and corrosion by preventing air and moisture from reaching the metal surface. Approximately two Dynamat Xtreme bulk packs are needed for comprehensive Midget cockpit coverage.
Dynaliner
Dynaliner thermal barrier is designed to be applied over Dynamat Xtreme, providing additional thermal insulation. Available in 1/8-inch, 1/4-inch, and 1/2-inch thicknesses, the thinner material suits contoured areas such as the gearbox tunnel, while the thicker material is appropriate for flat sections such as the floor pans. Dynatape seals the joints between Dynamat sections.
Grommets & Soundproofing
For owners on a tighter budget, a jute-based soundproofing kit provides good insulation at lower cost, though without the corrosion-prevention benefits of the butyl-based materials. Sound deadening pads in the original specification are available for Heritage body shells.
