Suspension and steering components for classic British cars, covering front and rear suspension parts, coil and leaf springs, bushes, steering racks and column components, shock absorbers and a wide range of suspension upgrades. British classics from the 1950s to the 1980s span a range of suspension architectures, coil-over-wishbone front ends, leaf-sprung rear axles, lever-arm and telescopic dampers, rack-and-pinion and recirculating-ball steering, but the underlying parts inventory is well-supported across applications.
Front Suspension
Most British classic sports cars and saloons used a double-wishbone front suspension with coil springs, fitted to a pressed-steel or fabricated front crossmember. Lever-arm Armstrong dampers served as the upper link on many designs, with the damper integrated into the suspension geometry. Bushes are typically rubber in original specification, with polyurethane upgrade options widely available for owners seeking sharper handling, particularly for trackday or spirited road use.
Rear Suspension
Leaf-sprung live rear axles dominate the British classic landscape, with the leaf spring connected to the chassis via shackle and bracket arrangements. Spring rates and load ratings vary by body style, market and period, ride height differences between roadster and GT variants, between home-market and US-market specification, and between early and late production are not uncommon. Coil-sprung rear ends appear on selected models. Rear dampers are typically lever-arm Armstrong units in original specification, with telescopic conversions available as an upgrade for most popular applications.
Steering
Rack-and-pinion steering is the dominant configuration on British classic sports cars, with the rack mounted to the front crossmember and connected to the wheels via tie-rods and ball-joints. Recirculating-ball steering boxes appear on some saloon applications. Steering columns evolved across the production period from solid to energy-absorbing types as safety regulations tightened, and column locks were progressively introduced from the late 1960s.
This Section's Sub-Categories
The Suspension & Steering section opens into two sub-categories, Suspension Components for springs, bushes, wishbones, kingpins, anti-roll bars, mounts and associated suspension hardware; and Shock Absorbers for lever-arm, telescopic and adjustable dampers. Use the sub-category tiles to navigate to the relevant section, or use the in-page filter to narrow by make and model. The MGOC Spares British Classic Car Parts Suspension & Steering range encompasses front and rear suspension components, coil and leaf springs, bushes, steering racks, steering column components, shock absorbers and a wide range of suspension upgrades for the British classics we serve. MGOC Spares is constantly expanding our range for these non-MG British classic marques, and new lines are being added to this section regularly.
