The Classic Mini used 7-inch round headlamps throughout production, but several headlamp types were fitted across different markets and production dates. Halogen conversion kits are available from both Wipac and Lucas in RHD and LHD configurations, offering significantly improved light output over the original sealed beam units. Two Wipac specifications are available, a standard and an upgraded type, alongside Lucas equivalents. Some earlier Minis assembled at the Seneffe factory in Belgium were fitted with RHD/LHD switchable headlamps of a Cibie/Valeo design, recognisable by their larger (deeper) outer chrome rims.
No parts for the Cibie/Valeo headlamp assemblies are available other than the P45T type bulbs, though the assemblies may be replaced in their entirety by any of the standard headlamp types listed here, with the exception of load-levelling headlamps.
Front and Rear Lamps
Front indicator, sidelamp, rear lamp and number plate lamp specifications all changed across production, with different lens colours, housing designs and bulb types fitted at various points. When ordering replacement lamp assemblies or individual lenses, confirming your car’s model and approximate production date ensures the correct specification, fitting lamps from the wrong production period may result in incorrect light output, poor fit or non-compliance with MOT requirements.
Interior Lamps
Interior lamp types changed across production. The most significant change was the introduction of flush-fitting interior lamps from 1985 onwards, which require a different roof cantrail mounting arrangement from the earlier bulkier lamp design.
The Mk IV bodyshell comes with the cantrail that accepts the 1985 onwards flush-fitting lamp, if fitting an earlier, bulkier lamp to this bodyshell, an adaptor plate is required.
