Fitted to all MGFs and MGTFs the role of the charcoal canister is to absorb fuel vapour from the petrol tank; when under normal driving conditions the solenoid within the canister should open allowing excess fuel vapour to be purged through the inlet manifold and exchanged for fresh air drawn in via an automatic one way valve. When the petrol filler cap is in place an in-line two-way fuel filler valve provides venting, allowing the fuel vapour to exit the tank via the canister and be purged through the inlet manifold. Although the charcoal filter within the canister is designed to last the life of the car, faulty operation of the internalised purge solenoid or in-line fuel filler valve can result in a strong whiff of fuel within the interior. MGOC Spares has stocks of factory original fuel canisters inclusive of two-way filler valve and hoses.
