The monocoque body is particularly vulnerable to corrosion, and the conditions that promote it most aggressively, condensation trapped under an impermeable cover or repeated wetting and drying from weather, are precisely what the wrong cover creates. Even in a clean garage, dust settling on paintwork over winter months creates a fine abrasive layer that scratches the paint surface when the cover is removed. A non-breathable indoor cover holds damp air against the bodywork and creates ideal conditions for rust to develop beneath the surface. Tailored versions are available for both the Roadster and GT.
Long-Term Storage
For long-term storage, a breathable cover is strongly recommended regardless of whether the car is kept inside or outside. Condensation beneath a sealed cover on a car that is not used regularly is one of the most common causes of body deterioration on otherwise well-maintained cars, and protecting the vulnerable areas, the bonnet edges, boot lid trailing edge, and windscreen seal where moisture accumulates, makes a tailored cover one of the most effective preservation measures available, particularly for a model as rare as the MGC where condition has a direct impact on value.
