The MGB GT V8 was fitted with V8-specific 5J × 14 inch Dunlop composite alloy wheels, a 14-inch diameter wheel with a 5-inch rim width and a 4-stud fixing pattern. The composite construction (cast alloy centre and chrome-plated steel rim, riveted together) was the factory specification, providing a distinctive appearance and slightly reduced unsprung weight compared with steel wheels. The V8 wheel is a unique item not interchangeable with any standard MGB wheel: the styling, dimensions and centre design differ from the four-cylinder car's standard fitments.
Wheel Centre Variations
Chrome-bumper V8s were fitted with one Dunlop composite alloy wheel design; rubber-bumper V8s used a revised wheel centre. Both wheels share the 5J × 14 inch dimensions and 4-stud fixing pattern, with the centre styling distinguishing them visually.
Original wheels in good condition are increasingly hard to find, and modern replacement wheels in the original style are available.
Wire Wheel Conversion
Factory V8s were never fitted with wire wheels in production specification, wire-wheel conversions on V8s are aftermarket fitments. Where wire wheels are desired, the conversion requires splined hubs to replace the standard 4-stud hubs, a complete set of wire wheels with the appropriate offset for the V8 chassis, and the centre-lock spinners that secure the wheels to the splined hubs.
