Performance ignition upgrades for the MGB GT V8 cover electronic ignition replacement for the original points and condenser, performance distributors with revised advance curves, performance coils for higher spark output, and improved rotor arm specifications. The combined effect on the standard 3528cc V8 is improved cold-starting, more consistent ignition timing, longer service intervals (no points to renew), and somewhat improved performance and economy.
Electronic Ignition Units
Electronic ignition units replace the contact points and condenser in the distributor with a hall-effect or optical sensor that triggers the ignition coil. The electronic trigger eliminates points wear (which causes timing drift between service intervals) and provides more consistent timing accuracy. Most units fit inside the original distributor body with no external modification, retaining the original distributor's vacuum and centrifugal advance mechanisms.
Performance Distributors
Performance distributors offer revised advance curves to suit modified engines or to improve the standard engine's response. The advance curve, how quickly timing advances with engine speed and load, significantly affects the way an engine feels at part throttle and the way it responds to acceleration demand. Performance distributors are typically chosen as part of a wider engine specification rather than as a stand-alone upgrade.
Performance Coils
Performance coils provide higher secondary voltage than standard coils, useful where the spark plug gap has been opened up to suit modified specifications, or where the standard ignition system is struggling at high engine speed. Performance coils are typically used in conjunction with performance HT leads rated for the higher voltages.
Red Rotor Arms
Red rotor arms are an upgrade specification offering improved durability and conductivity over the standard rotor arm. The rotor arm carries each ignition pulse from the distributor centre electrode to the cylinder-specific cap electrode; rotor failure causes misfire that can be difficult to diagnose. Red rotor arms reduce the risk of this failure and are a worthwhile small upgrade during routine ignition service.
