Service & Lubrication

The Service and Lubrication catalogue is the consumables home for every owner who services their own classic MG, and for the workshops that service them on the owner's behalf. The range is organised around what a car actually needs to keep running, the right oil in the right grade, the right coolant for a mixed-metal cooling system, the right brake fluid, and the right service-kit consumables, and is structured by product family rather than by model, because the same Castrol Classic oils, brake fluid, and coolant serve every car from the MG TD through to the MGB GT V8, with dedicated modern lubricants for the later K-series MGF and TF. Engine Oils, Gear Oils & Service Kits Castrol Classic Oils is the dedicated lubricants line produced for veteran, vintage, and classic vehicles, covering the monogrades and multigrades originally specified for the MGA, MGB, Midget, MGC, MG TD, and TF, with the high-zinc and high-phosphorus boundary-layer protection that flat-tappet pushrod engines need, while modern engine oils sit alongside the classic range for the K-series MGF and TF, which use tighter clearances and different additive requirements. Classic gear oils cover the gearbox and rear-axle specifications used across the range, engine-grade oil for the A-series and B-series gearboxes that specify it, mineral hypoid for the MGB and MGC rear axles, and the appropriate grades for earlier applications, modern GL5 gear oils being avoided where they would attack the brass and bronze components in older gearboxes and overdrives. Service kits collect filters, plugs, points, condenser, rotor arm, and the gasket sets needed for a routine service into a single pack matched to the specific model and engine variant. Coolant & Brake Fluid The coolant range covers extended-life coolant formulated for the mixed-metal cooling systems of the classic era, brass and copper radiators, gunmetal water pumps, cast-iron blocks, and aluminium heads, with standard ethylene-glycol coolants in conventional specification alongside it for owners servicing systems on the original chemistry. Modern OAT long-life coolant must never be mixed with traditional glycol-based coolant, as mixing the two produces a damaging sludge. Clutch and brake fluid covers DOT4 in the grades suited to the dual-circuit and single-circuit systems used across the range, plus the silicone DOT5 alternatives for cars in long-term storage, with DOT5 never to be introduced into a system filled with glycol-based fluid as the two are chemically incompatible. Sealants, Adhesives & Additives Gasket sealants cover the silicone-based and traditional non-setting sealants needed for sumps, rocker covers, water pumps, and the various dry-joint applications across the classic engine range, while adhesives cover contact adhesives for interior trim, silicone adhesives for windscreen and rear-window rubbers, and the bonding products needed during a full interior refit. Fuel additives cover lead-replacement additives that give unhardened valve seats the boundary-layer protection original leaded petrol provided, essential for engines not rebuilt with hardened exhaust valve seats, plus ethanol-stabiliser products that mitigate the corrosion and water-uptake issues caused by modern E10 unleaded in classic carburettor cars. Workshop Consumables The SU dashpot damper requires a specific light oil that controls the rate of piston rise and directly affects the mixture during acceleration, with carburettor cleaner stocked alongside it to refresh SU and Stromberg dashpots. Brake lubricants cover the high-temperature copper and ceramic greases used on the back of pad shims, on caliper slide pins, and on the leading edges of brake shoes, where the right grease in the right place dramatically reduces brake squeal and uneven wear, while general greases, penetrating oil, anti-seize compound, thread lock, and gasket sealant complete the workshop range. Across the catalogue the philosophy is the same, the right specification for the classic in front of you, sourced from the brands the cars were originally designed around, and stocked in the volumes a working owner needs.
