Stainless steel exhaust systems represent the most significant upgrade available for the Midget exhaust, offering a lifetime guarantee against corrosion, a stark contrast to the limited service life of a mild steel system in the British climate, where road salt and damp conditions accelerate the breakdown of even galvanised steel exhausts.
Double S Stainless Systems
Double S stainless steel exhaust systems are available for both the 1275cc and 1500cc, manufactured in the UK from 309 and 401 grade stainless steel with mirror-finish silencer bodies. Systems are available in standard and sports specifications. Standard systems provide efficient gas flow with the traditional MG exhaust tone, while sports systems are designed for improved performance with a sportier note. Configuration options include single-box systems, twin-box systems, and twin-box systems with twin tail pipes, each produced to accurate tolerances for straightforward DIY fitment.
Choosing the Right System
For the 1275cc, the system specification depends on whether the car has a bell-type manifold connection (used with the single-box and earlier twin-box arrangements through to 1972) or a flange-type manifold connection (used with the twin-box arrangement from 1973 onward). For the 1500, a single system specification covers the production range, although fitting kits vary by chassis number as with the OE systems. Confirming the manifold type, exhaust system arrangement, and chassis number before ordering ensures the correct configuration is supplied.
Performance Exhaust Manifolds
Tubular stainless steel performance manifolds are available for the 1098cc, 1275cc, and 1500cc. These can be purchased individually or as part of a combined manifold-and-system package for maximum performance benefit, ensuring the manifold and downstream system are matched for optimal flow. The stainless construction ensures the manifold will not deteriorate over time, unlike mild steel performance manifolds which, while effective when new, will eventually corrode at the high-stress flange and weld areas.
Big-Bore Systems
Big-bore exhaust systems with larger-diameter pipework and a single large silencer are available for owners seeking maximum performance gain. These systems are designed for use with a big-bore tubular manifold and deliver the greatest improvement in exhaust gas flow and power output of any available upgrade combination. The larger bore produces a distinctive deep exhaust note that is notably different from the standard system, with a more aggressive character at full throttle while remaining acceptable for road use at cruising speeds.
Exhaust Accessories
Chrome and stainless steel exhaust trim tips provide a finishing touch to the tail pipe, available in straight, angled, and twin configurations. High-temperature exhaust paint is available in silver, black, red, and white for refinishing manifolds and downpipes, the silver finish closely replicating the original cast iron appearance once cured. Exhaust sealant paste should be applied to all system joints during assembly to ensure a gas-tight seal, particularly at the manifold-to-front-pipe joint where exhaust pulses are at their most intense.
