Paint & Rust Protection > Rust Protection

Rust is the single most consequential enemy of any classic car used on UK roads. Road salt, winter moisture, condensation in closed sections, and the years of accumulated exposure that any classic has lived through all contribute, and an owner serious about preserving the car for the long term takes rust protection as seriously as any other service item. The Rust Protection section gathers the established product families used by the classic-car trade for decades, Waxoyl, Hammerite, Fertan, and the wider Rust Prevention range. Waxoyl, Underbody and Cavity Protection Waxoyl is the established underbody and cavity-wax product for British classics. Applied to sills, chassis rails, box sections, and the back of inner wings, by aerosol with an extension wand, by pressure-spray gun, or by brush in accessible areas, Waxoyl forms a self-healing waxy barrier that excludes moisture and road salt from the steel underneath. The self-healing property is the headline benefit: a stone chip or scratch in the Waxoyl layer slowly fills itself through the wax's own flow under temperature cycling, restoring the protective barrier without intervention. Annual top-up application, particularly into cavity areas, keeps the protection intact through the working life of the car. Waxoyl is covered in detail in its own dedicated section. Hammerite, Direct-to-Rust Enamel Hammerite is the direct-to-rust enamel paint used on chassis components, suspension brackets, brake backplates and any visible steel that needs a durable protective finish. The headline property is that Hammerite can be applied directly over surface rust, after a wire-brush preparation to remove loose flakes, without the need for chemical rust converters or full strip-back to bare metal. The enamel converts the residual surface oxide chemically as it cures, producing a stable surface that resists further corrosion. The hammer finish (the textured slightly-metallic appearance) hides minor surface imperfections and gives the workmanlike appearance that suits chassis and underbody components without trying to look factory-new. Hammerite is covered in detail in its own dedicated section. Fertan, Rust Converter Fertan is the German-developed rust converter that chemically transforms existing surface rust into a stable iron-tannate compound. Applied directly to rusty steel, surface rust, light pitting, even heavier corrosion where the metal is still structurally present, Fertan reacts with the iron oxide to produce a black tannic film that can be painted over directly. The product is particularly valuable in areas where complete metal renewal is not practical, inside box sections, on the inside faces of fitted panels, on the chassis rails behind suspension components, where stopping the rust where it sits is the right approach. Fertan is covered in detail in its own dedicated section, alongside the wider Rust Prevention range, cavity waxes, anti-corrosion sprays, and the specialist products for specific applications.
