A brief history of the MGB Gearbox
1962–1967: 4-speed manual gearbox with 3 synchromesh gears and optional Laycock De Normanville “D-Type” overdrive.
1965: Introduction of MGB GT with the “Tube” style axle, featuring central differential and removable rear cover.
1967: Manual gearbox upgraded to all-synchromesh (“LH-Type” overdrive optional).
1967: Borg-Warner Type 35 3-speed automatic introduced (dropped in 1973 due to low demand).
Spring 1967: “Tube” axle phased into all MGB roadsters, replacing original “Banjo” type axle.
All manual MGBs use an 8" single dry plate spring clutch, hydraulically operated by a Lockheed master cylinder.
Restoring the gearbox can enhance the driving experience, reduce problems, and provide a significant advantage over the original box, especially for those restoring or customizing classic MGB models. Many enthusiasts comment that a gearbox upgrade is one of the best ways to improve the touch and feel of your MGB.
