Electrical components for classic British cars, covering lighting, ignition, switches and the wider range of electrical sub-assemblies that keep a British classic on the road. The Lucas-dominated British electrical landscape of this period, distributors, coils, switches, alternators, starter motors, lamps and wiring harnesses, is well-supported, with original-specification components alongside modern upgrades that offer improved reliability and brightness.
The Lucas Standard
Joseph Lucas was the dominant supplier of electrical components to the British motor industry from the 1920s through to the 1980s, and the Lucas part numbering system remains the reference for cross-application identification. A Lucas distributor on a Triumph and a Lucas distributor on an MG of the same period will typically share rebuild parts, points, condensers, rotor arms, distributor caps, even where the advance curves and ignition timing differ. The same is true for Lucas headlamps, side lights, indicators and many switches.
Ignition Components
Distributors, coils, points, condensers, rotor arms, distributor caps and HT leads are stocked across the major British classic applications. Electronic ignition conversion kits, fitted in place of points-and-condenser ignition, are widely available and represent a popular reliability upgrade. The benefits include consistent ignition timing without periodic adjustment, improved starting in cold and damp conditions, and reduced maintenance demands; the visible appearance of the engine bay is preserved where the distributor cap remains original.
Charging and Starting
Dynamos were standard on early British classics and were progressively replaced by alternators from the late 1960s onwards. Alternator conversion kits are popular for cars that have outgrown the modest output of the original dynamo, particularly cars fitted with electric fans, modern lighting upgrades, audio systems or other electrical loads. Starter motors are stocked in original Lucas specification and as gear-reduction modern equivalents, the latter offering significantly improved cranking torque and faster starts.
Lighting Upgrades
LED conversion kits for headlamps, sidelights, indicators and rear lights have transformed classic car lighting in recent years. Original sealed-beam units can be replaced with LED equivalents that fit the original housings, offering significantly improved brightness, a particularly valuable upgrade for owners who drive at night or in rural areas. Halogen conversions remain available for owners who prefer the original incandescent appearance with modern bulb life.
This Section's Sub-Categories
The Electrics section opens into three sub-categories, Lighting for headlamps, side lights, indicators, rear lights, fog lights and bulbs; Ignition for distributors, coils, points, condensers, rotor arms, distributor caps, HT leads and electronic ignition kits; and Switches for column switches, dashboard switches, ignition switches and electrical switchgear. The MGOC Spares British Classic Car Parts Electrics range encompasses lighting, ignition components, switches, distributors, coils, alternators, starter motors, dynamos and electrical hardware for the British classics we serve. MGOC Spares is constantly expanding our range for these non-MG British classic marques, and new lines are being added to this section regularly.
