The 16AC alternator with external regulator was the original fitment, replaced by the 16ACR with built-in regulator from the 1969 model year. Exchange alternators are available for both types. Parts for rebuilding AC alternators are becoming increasingly scarce, and it is sometimes more practical to replace a malfunctioning AC unit with the later ACR type, this requires a Euro termination plug kit to adapt the wiring harness, and the redundant external regulator must be bypassed. This conversion requires knowledge of charging circuit wiring; owners unfamiliar with auto electrical work should entrust it to a competent auto electrician.
Alternator Components
Front and rear bearings are available for both AC and ACR types, though specifications differ. Brush kits are specific to each type. The alternator fan, pulley, adjusting link with pillar and tolerance ring, and all mounting bolts, washers, and nuts are available individually. The ACR alternator requires a Euro termination plug kit for correct connection.
Two bolts with plain and special washers and nyloc nuts secure the alternator to the engine side cover, with a further screw connecting the alternator to the adjusting link.
