MGB Door Cappings

Interior > Door Cappings

Door cappings trim the upper edge of the door on the MGB, running along the top of the door panel where the occupant’s arm naturally rests. They are among the most visible and most handled trim components in the car and among the first to show wear, cracking, or discolouration. The waist rails at the top of the door casings were always black on all cars until 1970, regardless of trim colour, to match the facia crash roll. The first type of waist rail had a small tab pointing downwards at the rear; a new design with a downwards step behind the rear quarterlight frame was introduced in August 1965. Cappings are available in vinyl and leather in a wide choice of colours to match the interior trim scheme. Roadster sets comprise a pair; GT sets include four, front door cappings plus rear quarter cappings, which differ in profile. Veneer cappings in burr walnut, burr elm, and black burr walnut are available as matched sets, and carbon fibre cappings provide a more contemporary alternative. The veneer and carbon fibre options are particularly effective when coordinated with a matching dashboard overlay and console panels. Door capping covers allow the existing capping base to be retrimmed without replacing the complete assembly, a practical option where the capping structure is sound but the covering has deteriorated. GT rear door cappings and their covers are available separately. Door capping brackets are available for both Roadster and GT, with a dedicated fitting kit, trim screw kits in chrome and black, and door panel clips. The 1972 interior revision changed the capping profile on both body styles, confirm year and body style before ordering.
