Uprated brake discs for the V8 include grooved discs (with concentric grooves machined into the friction surface) and improved-specification vented discs. Grooves help expel brake dust and gases from between the pad and disc, maintaining friction consistency under repeated heavy braking. Improved vented discs use revised internal vane design or enhanced metallurgy for better heat handling.
Uprated Brake Pads
High-friction-material pads provide greater stopping force at a given pedal effort than the standard pads, with improved fade resistance under repeated heavy use. The trade-off is typically faster pad wear and greater wear on the discs they run against. Uprated pads should be matched to the disc specification, running aggressive pads on standard discs causes excessive disc wear without giving the full performance benefit.
When to Upgrade
Brake upgrades suit cars that are used hard, fitted with capacity-upgrade engines that justify higher braking performance, or used on track days where the standard system would face fade. Cars used for normal road touring rarely need upgraded brakes, the factory system is well-matched to road use of a standard V8 and the additional cost and shorter pad/disc life of upgraded components is not generally justified.
Compatibility
Uprated discs and pads in the appropriate V8 dimensions fit using the original calipers and mounting hardware. Upgrade kits typically include matched discs and pads to ensure the friction-material specification suits the disc material and surface treatment.
