Rear telescopic damper conversions complement the front conversion by replacing the original rear lever-arm dampers with modern telescopic units. The rear dampers control the live rear axle movement, managing the response of the semi-elliptic leaf springs to bumps, dips, and the traction loads generated during acceleration and braking.
Kit Availability
The conversion kits are available for both the 1275cc and 1500cc from specialist manufacturers. They are designed for fitment without permanent modification to the car, mounting to the existing damper brackets and axle using the hardware supplied. The telescopic units provide vastly superior damping compared to the lever-arm originals, particularly in controlling the rear axle’s tendency to hop or skip under hard acceleration over bumpy surfaces, a characteristic that lever-arm rear dampers struggle to manage as they age.
Rear Telescopic Damper Conversions Fitting
For a matched handling balance, front and rear telescopic conversions should be fitted as a pair. Fitting telescopic dampers at one end only will alter the front-to-rear damping balance, which can produce unpredictable handling at the limit, the end with better damping will grip and respond faster than the end with tired lever-arm units, creating an imbalance that the driver may find unsettling.
