Interior > Carpet Fixings

Carpet installation in any classic MG involves more than simply laying the carpet across the floor pan, the carpet must be secured to the underlying structure so it does not shift during driving, the edges must be finished cleanly where the carpet meets the seats, sills, and bulkheads, and the various small fixings that secure the carpet in position must be sympathetic to the overall interior finish. Securing carpet correctly matters more than it might first appear, as carpet that lifts at the edges, slides under the pedals, or bunches over the transmission tunnel is not simply untidy, it can obstruct pedal operation, accelerate wear at the fold points, and undermine an otherwise well-executed retrim, with a carpet that slides beneath the brake pedal being a genuine safety hazard. Veltex Carpet Clips & Press-Studs The headline product is sets of Veltex carpet clips suitable for all classic-MG models, the small spring-steel clips that grip the carpet backing through small holes in the floor pan, providing the secondary retention that holds carpet edges and underfelt firmly in place without showing on the visible face of the carpet, the design having been the established workshop standard for classic-MG carpet retention for decades. Sets are stocked sized to each car, typically twelve clips for the smaller roadster cabin and sixteen for the larger GT or fully-carpeted applications reflecting the additional carpet sections covering rear shelf, boot floor, and rear quarter pockets, with individual clips also available for owners replacing single lost or broken clips rather than fitting a complete set. Carpet press-studs are the two-part fasteners that allow the carpet to be removed for cleaning while keeping it securely in position during normal use, one half being a button-shaped male part stitched or pressed into the carpet backing and the other being a captive female part secured to the floor pan or sill area, typically used at the front edge of the floor carpet near the bulkhead, at the seat-mounting positions, and at any other point where the carpet might otherwise shift or curl, allowing the carpet to be removed for cleaning without unscrewing anything. Black nylon button retainers secure carpet edges cleanly to the floor at specific anchor points. Edge Binding & Trim Retainers Edge binding is the cloth or vinyl tape sewn or bonded around the edge of the carpet, providing a finished edge that does not fray and that presents a tidy appearance where the carpet meets the seat or sill area, original-equipment carpet typically having binding in a colour matched to the carpet pile for a unified appearance, with contrast binding used on certain higher-specification applications. Reproductions and renewal carpet sets typically include the binding pre-applied, with renewable binding available separately for owners repairing damaged edges. Trim retainers are the small metal or plastic clips that hold the carpet edge against the underlying structure at specific points, typically along the door sills and at the rear of the floor pan, where the carpet edge needs to be held flat to prevent it lifting during normal use, and on cars where the gear-lever and handbrake apertures pass through the carpet, dedicated trim strips finish the edges cleanly. Carpet Adhesive & Heat Shields Specialist carpet adhesives bond the carpet to the underlying structure where press-stud or clip fixings are not appropriate, typically on inner sill areas, on the inside of the rear bulkhead where the carpet meets the rear shelf, and on the inside of the boot or hatchback area. Carpet adhesive is available in brush-on and aerosol formats, the brush-on giving more control on large flat areas such as the floor panels and tunnel, while the aerosol is more practical for smaller sections and areas where the carpet needs to be positioned precisely before the adhesive sets, both formulated for automotive carpet application and bonding carpet to the steel floor without the brittleness or failure that general-purpose adhesives produce over time. Contact adhesive applied by brush is the recommended method for the main carpet sections, both surfaces receiving a coat allowed to become touch-dry before pressing together, with the orientation confirmed before committing as contact adhesive cannot be repositioned. When fitting carpet over Dynamat or other soundproofing, adhesive should be applied to the top surface of the soundproofing rather than to the bare metal beneath. Heat shields fit between the carpet and the transmission tunnel or exhaust tunnel, protecting the carpet from heat transfer from the components below, particularly valuable on cars with engine conversions or on applications where the original exhaust runs close to the floor.
