Seatbelt fitment on the MGB evolved across the production run. Static seatbelts became standard factory equipment in 1971, prior to this, seatbelt fixing points had been fitted to the heelboard as standard on all roadsters from March 1969, and to the shroud panel behind the windscreen from September 1970, but the belts themselves were optional. Inertia reel belts became a factory-fitted option on the GT from late 1971, and on North American roadsters from December 1971, with the belt mounting point relocated from the tonneau panel to the wheelarch on North American cars. Kangol static belts allowing one-handed operation were introduced on home market cars from May 1972.
Inertia reel belts became standard across all models from the 1977 model year, with improved Kangol series belts fitted from February 1977. Pre-1977 Roadsters were not designed to accept inertia reels as standard and require a reinforcement boss to be welded to the body at the correct position before an inertia reel can be fitted, this is an important structural consideration that should not be overlooked when retrofitting.
Belts & Harnesses
Inertia reel belts are available individually or as a paired kit, in black or red, with dedicated fitting kits for MGB Roadster and GT installations. Eye bolts, threaded plates, and nuts are available individually. For track use, three-point and four-point race harnesses are available.
Seatbelt Guides
Seatbelt guides in black anodised aluminium with MG motif address the common issue of the belt sitting awkwardly across the shoulder, particularly on pre-1977 cars where the belt routing was not designed around an inertia reel. Two versions are available to suit different headrest types.
