The washer system changed significantly across the MGB production run. Chrome bumper cars used a manual foot-operated pump, replaced by an electric pump on rubber bumper cars from September 1974. The washer bottle itself changed from a rigid bottle with bracket mounting to a flexible bag arrangement during later production. The bottle bracket mounting position also changed, early Roadsters had it mounted on the pedal box blanking plate, while later Roadsters and all GTs mount to the radiator diaphragm.
Chrome washer jets were fitted to earlier production cars, with black plastic jets from later chassis numbers. The Roadster used two single chrome jets while the GT used a single twin-jet unit. Manual and electric pumps are available as separate items, alongside washer bottles with cap and valve, the flexible washer bag for later cars, and all brackets, fixings, and associated hardware. Non-return valves, grommets, T-pieces, and tubing in both diameters are all available individually for repairs to existing systems.
Stainless steel washer bottle brackets are available as an alternative to the painted original. Electric washer conversion kits are available for chrome bumper cars originally fitted with the manual hand-operated dashboard plunger pump, in toggle switch and period-style rocker switch versions. A heated washer fluid system fits in line with any washer setup and warms the fluid before it reaches the jets, preventing frozen jets on cold mornings.
