MGF & TF Rear Arms, Hubs & Roll Bar - MGTF

Suspension & Steering > Rear Suspension > Rear Arms, Hubs & Roll Bar - MGTF

The MG TF rear suspension is a multi-link coil-spring design that replaces the MGF's Hydragas rear architecture entirely. Multiple locating arms control the rear wheel independently in each plane of movement, camber, toe, and caster, with coil springs and conventional telescopic dampers providing the springing and damping. The geometry was designed alongside the approximately 20% stiffer MG TF bodyshell, and all of the locating arms, bushes, hubs, and anti-roll bar components here are MG TF-specific and not interchangeable with MGF equivalents. Lower Arm & Compliance Bush The MG TF rear lower arm is supplied complete with bushes and comes in two production variants, an early specification and a later one, with the bolt fixing the lower arm to the rear hub also changing at a later breakpoint. Early arms can be replaced with the later items, but both arms must be renewed as a pair to avoid asymmetric suspension behaviour. The compliance bush and bracket assembly is a distinctive MG TF component, a bracketed rubber bush unit that provides controlled fore-aft compliance under braking while maintaining precise lateral wheel location, fitted on each side, handed, and existing in two production variants. Worn compliance bushes produce rear-end squirm under braking and accelerated inner-edge tyre wear, common service items on high-mileage cars, and a polyurethane rear compliance bush upgrade is catalogued for owners wanting a firmer, longer-lasting alternative. Trailing Link, Anti-Roll Bar & Upper Arm The MG TF carries a trailing link that locates the rear hub fore-aft and resists braking forces, the earlier production link being adjustable to allow fine-tuning of rear-end geometry and the later link non-adjustable, reflecting a production simplification, with a separate rear trailing link also catalogued as handed items positioned differently in the geometry, both positions having their own dedicated polyurethane upgrade bush set. The MG TF rear anti-roll bar is a single specification, mounted via clamp brackets and rubber bushes, the links handed and supplied as part of the rear lower arm assembly on most cars though orderable separately, with two upgrade link options catalogued, a pair of uprated links for general use and a dedicated link matching the specification used on the 2008 MG TF 85th Anniversary limited edition. The rear upper arm is MG TF-specific, using a single bolt through a pivot with front and rear spacers rather than the shaft-and-bearing arrangement used elsewhere, giving a simpler and more serviceable pivot design. Ball Joint, Hubs & Bearings The MG TF rear upper ball joint kit is a specific part different from both the MGF upper ball joint and the MG TF front upper ball joint, and is not interchangeable with either, so MG TF rear should be specified explicitly when ordering. The MG TF rear hubs are handed and MG TF-specific, not interchangeable with MGF rear hubs because the suspension geometry and bolt pattern differ, while the outer CV joint has two configurations depending on ABS status, non-ABS cars using the standard joint on the right and the ABS-type on the left to provide the engine management with wheel-speed data, and ABS cars using the ABS-type on both sides. The wheel hub and wheel studs are common with the MGF and front specifications, and the rear hub bearing kit is the same specification as the front and as the MGF equivalents, one kit covering every corner, containing the bearing, the single-use stake nut which must never be reused, and the inner circlip. Several targeted polyurethane bush upgrade sets are catalogued for the MG TF rear, allowing owners to refresh specific areas, offering greater wear resistance and more controlled compliance than rubber at the cost of slightly more road noise transmission into the cabin.
