MGF & TF Headlamps & Front Indicators

Electrics > Lighting > Headlamps & Front Indicators

MGF and MG TF headlamp assemblies cover three distinct generations. MGF non-Trophy cars use composite reflector-type headlamp units, catalogued in four handed variants: RHD right, RHD left, LHD right, LHD left. MGF Trophy 160 cars use dedicated Trophy-specification headlamp units, again catalogued in four handed variants for RHD and LHD markets, visually distinct from the non-Trophy units. A Trophy headlamp pair is also catalogued as an upgrade for non-Trophy MGF owners who want the more aggressive Trophy front-end appearance, a direct fit using the existing mounting points. MG TF uses projector-type headlamp units with integral front indicators in the same housing, catalogued in four handed variants for RHD and LHD. None of the three generations is interchangeable: lens geometry, mounting points, and wiring connectors all differ. Headlamp Lens, Available Separately for MGF For MGF cars (both non-Trophy and Trophy), the headlamp lens is catalogued separately with gasket and retaining clips, handed RH and LH. This allows repair of cracked or chipped lenses without replacing the complete headlamp assembly, a significant saving when the reflector and internal optics remain sound. MG TF projector units are sealed assemblies and are replaced as a complete unit when the lens is damaged. Headlamp Bulbs, H1 on MGF, H1 and H7 on MG TF MGF headlamps use H1 55-watt bulbs for both main and dipped beam functions, four bulbs per car. MG TF projector units use H1 55-watt bulbs for main beam only (two per car) and H7 55-watt bulbs for dipped beam (two per car), the two beams are separate optical assemblies within the projector housing, and the bulbs are not interchangeable. Osram Silverstar uprated bulbs are catalogued as direct-fit alternatives in both H1 and H7 specifications, giving up to 50 per cent more light and a 20-metre beam extension over standard bulbs. A 5-watt pilot bulb is catalogued for the daytime running / sidelight function on both models, with MGF and MG TF using different pilot bulb types. MG TF units additionally require bulb covers, four main bulb covers, two handed pilot bulb covers with their gasket, and eight retaining screws, all catalogued individually. MGF Front Indicators, The Two-Way Colour Change at XD511059 Pre-XD511058 MGFs have amber-lensed front indicator assemblies fitted with clear 21-watt bulbs. From VIN XD511059 onwards, MGF cars use clear-lensed indicator assemblies fitted with amber 21-watt bulbs, the visual effect is a smoked appearance that changes to amber when flashing. Both the indicator assembly and the bulb must be ordered as a matched pair; fitting a clear lens with a clear bulb will produce a white indicator flash that is not road-legal. The K250 clear indicator conversion kit is catalogued as a four-piece set, both front indicators plus both side repeaters, for pre-MY2000 MGF owners converting to the later smoked appearance. A chrome rim upgrade for the side repeater bezel is also catalogued for owners adding a brighter visual accent. Side Repeaters Side repeater lamps in the front wings follow the same colour-change pattern as the front indicators: amber repeaters for pre-XD511058 MGF (with clear 5W bulbs), clear repeaters for post-XD511059 MGF and all MG TF (with amber 5W bulbs). 'E'-marked repeaters meeting post-2008 ECE Euro compliance are catalogued as a later-production alternative. Bulb holders and O-rings are catalogued individually. MG TF Front Fog Lamps, Two Mounting Screw Specifications MG TF front fog lamps are catalogued as handed RH and LH assemblies using H11 55-watt bulbs. The mounting screw specification changed during production at VIN 4D622375/4D622376, pre-4D622375 cars use one screw, post-4D622376 cars use a different screw, six per fog lamp position. Ordering replacement mounting hardware requires knowing the VIN. Fog lamp access for bulb replacement is from underneath the front bumper and straightforward without lamp removal.
