MGF & TF Wiper Motor & Rack

Weather Equipment > Wipers > Wiper Motor & Rack

The wiper motor and linkage rack sit in the engine-bay scuttle area beneath the windscreen cowl, where the motor drives a single linkage rack that in turn drives both wiper spindles through a rigid mechanical connection. It is a conventional arrangement that shares design principles with many Rover Group cars of the era, but the MGF and MG TF use their own specific motor and rack fitments along with a VIN breakpoint early in MGF production. MGOC Spares covers the complete system: motor, linkage (sometimes called wheelbox), spindle seals and mountings, and a drive arm repair kit for cases where the linkage has worn but the motor is still sound. Wiper Motor Assembly, VIN Breakpoint Two wiper motor assemblies are catalogued. DLB000260 fits early MGF cars to VIN YD514325, and DLB000270 fits MGF from VIN YD514326 and all MG TF cars. The later motor is not a simple replacement for the earlier one, connector, mounting and output shaft detail differ, and the correct assembly for the car's VIN must be used. Motor failure typically presents as intermittent operation, slow sweep speed or complete failure to respond to the switch, and is often preceded by audible straining as the motor works against a stiff or worn linkage. Motor mounting bolts (EYG100160, three required) are catalogued as separate items for use during replacement. Linkage Rack, RHD and LHD Variants The wiper linkage (wheelbox) is the rigid rack assembly that connects the motor to the two wiper spindles. DKD100450 fits RHD cars, and DKD100440 fits LHD, the different pivot geometry is required to achieve the correct sweep pattern for each drive orientation. Linkage wear typically manifests as slop at the pivots, which allows the wiper arms to overrun their parking position or to judder during their sweep. A tight, properly lubricated linkage is essential for both wiping performance and motor life, a worn linkage forces the motor to work harder, shortening its service life significantly. Wiper Drive Arm Repair Kit For cases where the linkage pivots have worn but the rack structure itself is sound, the DKT000010 wiper drive arm repair kit (also listed on site as the Windscreen Wiper Kit) provides the replacement parts needed to rebuild the linkage without replacing the complete assembly. The kit is a more economical route than a full linkage replacement and is appropriate where the linkage is otherwise in good condition. Where the rack itself has corroded, bent or suffered impact damage, a complete linkage assembly is the correct answer instead of the repair kit. Spindle Seals, Mountings and Fixings Each wiper spindle uses a dedicated rubber mounting (DKK100060, two required), a spindle seal (DLD100100, two required), a sealing washer (DYF100510, two required), a plain washer (DYF100500, two required) and a thin nut (DYH100710, two required). The spindle seals are the most critical of these items, when they fail, water finds its way into the scuttle area and, over time, into the linkage pivots and the motor itself. Fresh seals at every motor or linkage replacement are essential. The linkage rack itself sits on a rubber mounting (DLW100040) and is secured by a single bolt (DYP10015). Ordering the full set of seals, mountings, washers and nuts alongside any major wiper service is standard practice. Ordering Considerations Three pieces of information make wiper motor and rack ordering straightforward: the car's VIN (for the motor breakpoint at YD514325), the drive orientation (RHD or LHD) for the linkage, and whether the repair kit is sufficient or a full linkage replacement is needed. For owners carrying out preventive maintenance, for example before a major journey or after a long period of dry summer storage, the full spindle seal kit, fresh rubber mountings and a linkage repair kit together represent a small investment that transforms wiper performance and prolongs motor life. For outright motor failure, confirm VIN before ordering to ensure the correct assembly is supplied.
