All Classic Minis use a rack and pinion steering system, providing the direct and responsive steering feel that is one of the car’s defining characteristics. The steering rack is mounted beneath the engine on the floor of the car, connected to the front wheels via track rods and track rod ends. The rack converts the rotational input from the steering wheel into the lateral movement that turns the front wheels. The system is mechanically simple, inherently precise and gives the Mini its famously go-kart-like handling.
Steering Rack Maintenance
Rack gaiters protect the internal rack mechanism from road dirt and water ingress. Split or perished gaiters should be replaced without delay, contamination of the rack internals accelerates wear and leads to imprecise steering that no amount of track rod end replacement will cure. Track rod ends are a common wear item and should be inspected for play at every service. The track rod end locking nut secures the track rod end in its adjusted position and must be tightened after any tracking adjustment to prevent the setting from changing in use.
The rack is mounted to the floor via anti-friction strips and U-bolts, worn strips allow the rack to move in its mountings, producing a vague on-centre feel.
Steering Column
Steering column types changed across production and between RHD and LHD configurations. When ordering replacement column components, universal joints, bearings or column cowls, confirming whether your car is RHD or LHD and the approximate production date is essential as the column assembly, its length and its lower universal joint all differ between variants.
Steering Wheels
The original steering wheel specification changed across production and between model variants. Aftermarket steering wheels are a popular modification, when fitting a replacement wheel, the correct boss kit must be matched to the column spline specification for your car.
