Clips, Fixings & General Hardware > P Clips

P clips are the small rubber-lined steel clamps that secure fluid lines and electrical looms to the body, chassis and engine of a classic MG. The name comes from the shape, a P-profile spring-steel band with a rubber liner that grips the pipe or cable, fastened to the bodywork through a single screw or bolt at the hooked end. P clips are inexpensive, simple, and the right answer to securing a fuel pipe to the chassis rail or a wiring loom to the engine bay. They are also the items most often missing or corroded on a long-running classic, and a full refresh during a fuel-line or wiring-loom rebuild is one of the lowest-cost improvements an owner can make to the underside of the car. Why P Clips Matter A classic-MG fuel line, brake line or wiring loom passes through an environment full of heat, vibration and movement. The line must be held securely against the bodywork to prevent it chafing against panel edges, to keep it routed away from rotating components, and to maintain enough slack at flex joints (suspension travel, engine-mount movement) without leaving long unsupported spans that whip under vibration. The right P clip at the right spacing, typically every 300 to 400mm along a straight run, with closer spacing at bends and direction changes, keeps the line securely routed for the working life of the car. Without P clips, the line either chafes through (causing a fuel leak, a brake-fluid loss or an electrical short) or works loose at its end fittings (causing the same problems through a different mechanism). Sizes and Specifications P clips are stocked in the metric and imperial sizes used across BMC, BL and Rover production. The size refers to the internal diameter of the rubber liner, typically 6mm to 25mm for the range used in classic-MG service. Fuel pipes (5/16-inch and 3/8-inch on most applications) take specific clip sizes. Brake pipes (3/16-inch and 1/4-inch on classic applications) take smaller clips. Wiring looms vary widely in bundle diameter, and the clip selection depends on the bundle size at the specific point being clipped. The mounting hardware is the standard small machine screw or self-tapping screw, in the M4 to M6 range for most applications. Where a P clip has rusted through, the replacement should be matched to the original size and to the original mounting screw, putting a larger clip in place leaves the pipe slightly loose, while a smaller clip can pinch the pipe and restrict flow. Application and Renewal P clip renewal is straightforward but methodical. Each clip is removed (typically a single screw), the new clip is positioned to match the original, the pipe or cable is laid into the rubber liner, and the new mounting screw is fitted. Where the original mounting hole has corroded out, a new self-tapper one or two sizes larger will typically pick up clean metal underneath. For a complete fuel-line or brake-line renewal, doing the P clips at the same time as the lines themselves saves the awkward second pass under the car later, and gives a finished underside that looks consistent, new lines secured by new clips, rather than new lines secured by rust-stained old clips. The technical team is available to advise on the right clip count and the appropriate hardware for any specific job.
