The principal road wheel upgrade for the TD and TF is the conversion from steel disc wheels to centre-lock wire wheels, a modification that transforms the appearance of the car and is entirely reversible. Beyond the conversion itself, wider wheel options and cosmetic accessories are available.
Wire Wheel Conversion
The complete wire wheel conversion kit provides everything needed to convert a disc-wheeled TD or TF to centre-lock wire wheels: splined hubs (handed left and right), brake drums with retaining studs, lock tabs, and nuts, two-ear spinners, a copper knock-off hammer, and a spare wheel carrier adaptor with spinner. The conversion is specific to the model, TD and TF kits are not interchangeable due to different hub and drum specifications. The conversion requires the existing steel-wheel hub and drum assemblies to be removed from the stub axles and replaced with the wire wheel splined hubs and separate drums. The front wheel bearings, bearing spacers, and hub oil seals can be reused if they are in good condition.
Wider Wheels
The 60-spoke 4.5-inch and 72-spoke 5.5-inch wire wheels provide progressively wider tyre footprints. The wider wheels accept wider tyres that improve grip and cornering stability, particularly beneficial for cars used on modern roads and at higher speeds than originally anticipated. The 72-spoke tubeless wheel additionally eliminates the need for inner tubes, reducing the risk of sudden deflation from a punctured tube.
Cosmetic Accessories
Whitewall tyre trims and narrow whiteband trims provide the period American-market appearance. Chrome valve caps and anti-theft MG-logo valve caps dress the otherwise plain rubber valve stems. Tyre dressing restores the satin black finish to the tyre sidewalls.
