Paint & Rust Protection > Rust Prevention

The Rust Prevention section covers the preventative side of the corrosion-protection range, products applied to clean, structurally-sound steel to keep corrosion from starting, rather than the converters and barrier coatings used to deal with rust that has already taken hold. The principle is preventative: applying the right product to the right area before any visible corrosion appears is dramatically less expensive and less time-consuming than recovering from rust that has already eaten into a panel. Cavity Wax and Box-Section Protection Cavity wax is the headline category, light-bodied, penetrating wax products applied through aerosol with an extension wand into the closed box sections of a classic. Sills, chassis rails, the inner box sections at the front of the wheel arches, and the cavities formed by spot-welded panel construction are all vulnerable to rust starting from the inside, moisture condenses in these cavities, accumulates dust and contamination, and produces conditions in which corrosion thrives. A protective wax in these spaces excludes the moisture, displaces any water already present, and produces a long-term barrier that prevents corrosion taking hold. Cavity waxes are formulated to creep into seams and joints under capillary action, reaching surfaces that no direct-application method can cover. The aerosol with extension wand is the standard application tool, the wand reaches deep into the cavity through factory drain holes or small access holes drilled specifically for the purpose, and the spray pattern fills the cavity from the inside out. Anti-Corrosion Aerosols for Chassis and Underbody Anti-corrosion aerosols cover the chassis and underbody protection, products lighter than Waxoyl but more durable than a simple oil spray. The category includes the heavier petroleum-based products that produce a flexible film over chassis components, the lighter water-displacing products that drive moisture out of crevices on freshly-cleaned components, and the specialist marine-grade anti-corrosion sprays that hold up to the heaviest salt exposure. Each has a role: heavier products for the components that see hard service and need a durable coat, lighter products for the maintenance refreshes that keep accumulated humidity from starting corrosion on otherwise-clean surfaces. Workshop and Specialist Products The wider preventative range covers the specialist products that come up during restoration and maintenance work. Stainless-steel passivation products for owners welding or working stainless components, the steel needs chemical passivation after working to restore its corrosion resistance. Galvanic-corrosion isolation products for owners fitting aluminium components into steel structures, the dissimilar-metal contact would otherwise produce galvanic corrosion at the interface. Brake-system anti-seize compounds for bleed nipples, slide pins and the various brake-system fasteners that need to remain serviceable through the working life of the car. Across the section, the philosophy is the same: keeping corrosion from starting is dramatically less expensive than dealing with it once it has taken hold.
