Paint & Rust Protection > Waxoyl

Waxoyl has been the established underbody and cavity protection product for British classics for decades, designed to kill old rust and prevent new rust from forming. The principle is simple: a long-chain wax-and-mineral-oil emulsion is applied to the steel surfaces of the car's underside and inside its closed box sections, where it forms a flexible weatherproof skin between the steel and the road moisture, salt and contamination that cause corrosion. The Waxoyl coat excludes water from the steel, and where the coat is breached, by a stone chip, by a scrape against an obstacle, the wax flows back into the breach under heat cycling, restoring the barrier without intervention. This self-healing property is what distinguishes Waxoyl from a paint or solid-film coating. Application Methods Waxoyl is supplied in three presentations to suit different parts of the job. Aerosol Waxoyl with an extension wand is the right product for cavity application, the wand reaches into closed sills, chassis rails and box sections through factory drain holes, delivering the wax to surfaces that no other application method can reach. Tin Waxoyl is stocked in kit form, a 5-litre tin of clear Waxoyl with a 1-litre hand-held pressure-spray applicator, applied by spray gun for underbody work, the gun atomises the wax to give even coverage across complex shapes, into the back of inner wings, around suspension mountings and over the floorpan. Brush application is suitable for the larger flat areas where the spray pattern would waste material. The aerosol cavity wax and the tin underbody product use different blends, the cavity wax is thinner to allow it to flow into tight sections, while the underbody product is thicker to give a more durable surface coat. Application Timing and Coverage The right time to Waxoyl a classic is during a winter lay-up, the car is off the road, the underside is dry, and the wax has time to cure properly before the car is next used. A first application on a previously-untreated car is the largest job: every accessible cavity is treated, the entire underbody is covered, and the inside of the wheel arches and the back of the inner wings get particular attention. Subsequent annual top-ups are much smaller jobs, touching up the areas where the wax has worn thin, refreshing the cavity application, and checking that drain holes haven't blocked with accumulated wax (a small mineral-spirit clean keeps drain holes flowing). A car protected like this from new will outlast its original owner. Removal and Repair Waxoyl can be removed when needed, for welding work, for chassis painting, or for a structural repair, using mineral spirit or a heat gun to soften the wax for scraping. The work is messy but straightforward, and the cleaned surface can be re-Waxoyled after the repair is finished. The wax does not interfere with welding once the immediate area has been cleaned of product, so spot repairs in a treated chassis are a manageable proposition. For complete bodyshells where the entire underside needs preparing for painting, hot pressure-washing followed by mineral-spirit wipe-down is the standard preparation.
