The MGB GT V8 brake hydraulic system uses a combination of rigid steel brake pipework and short flexible hose sections. The rigid pipework runs from the master cylinder along the chassis to the front and rear brakes, with flexible hoses at each brake to accommodate suspension movement. A T-piece at the rear axle splits the rear brake supply into two short flexible hoses feeding each rear wheel cylinder.
Steel Brake Pipework
Rigid brake pipework is steel with copper-alloy or zinc plating for corrosion protection. Brake pipework runs the full length of the chassis on the V8 system and is exposed to road salt, moisture and stone damage in service.
Replacement pipework is available as cut lengths for spot repair, in pre-formed kits matching the V8's specific routings, and in copper pipe form (see Copper Brake Pipe Kits sub-section) for the longest service life.
Flexible Brake Hoses
Three flexible brake hoses are used in the V8 system, one at each front brake (between the chassis pipework and the caliper) and one connecting the rear chassis pipework to the T-piece on the axle, with two short hoses from the T-piece to each rear wheel cylinder. Flexible hoses age internally as the rubber deteriorates, eventually causing the hose to swell or to act as a non-return valve preventing brake release. Hose renewal is good practice every several years regardless of visible condition.
Brake Pipe Clips and Unions
Brake pipe clips secure the rigid pipework to the chassis at intervals, preventing vibration damage and chafing. Worn or missing clips are a frequent cause of brake pipe failure on neglected cars. Unions, T-pieces and connection fittings join sections of pipework and connect to the brakes themselves.

Braided Brake Hoses and Copper Brake Pipe Kits cover upgrade options.
